Abstract

1335008 Desalination D BLIESENER 7 April 1972 [8 May 1971] 16165/72 Heading BIB In a process in which salt water is separated into brine and fresh water in separation zone 4 at a supercritical pressure of approx. 450 atm. absolute pressure at which the specific liquid heat of the salt water and fresh water and of the brine increases only slightly up to the critical temperature, circulation of liquids in the apparatus is effected by double pistons 13 and 20 which are spring biassed towards their dead centre positions to reduce accelaration loses when the direction of the double piston motion is reversed. Pistons 13 and 20, used in conjunction with valves 7, 8, 14 and 15 and relief valves 9, 10, 16 and 17 pump salt water centrally up through heat exchangers 5 and 6 where it is heated to approximately the critical temperature to separation zone 4, further heat being supplied in tube 21 from fresh water passing through steam heated superheater 3. Fresh water separated at 4 is collected via cubes 2, heat exchanger 6 and tube 11, and residual brine is drawn off via tubes 22, heat exchangers 5 and tube 18. The heat in tube 21 may be alternatively supplied by an alternating electric field, an alternating current, microwaves or solar rays.
