Abstract
1334655 Testing gun barrels RHEINMETALL GmbH 14 June 1972 [7 Aug 1971] 27862/72 Heading G1S A gun barrel is pressure tested by placing an insert in the barrel to form an annular space between the insert and the barrel, and detonating a charge within the barrel to subject the barrel to gas pressure. In Fig. 1, a gun barrel 1 has a sliding wedge breech 3, and the insert 4 is placed in the firing chamber. The insert is sealed against the barrel by seals 6 and 8, and against wedge 3 by seal 15. A cartridge 10 is detonated, and the gas pressure is controlled by a rupture diaphragm 12. The gas pressure is applied to the barrel wall via channels 14 and annular space 9 and to the breech wedge 3 via channels 18 and 19 and annular space 17. In Fig. 2 the firing chamber end of a barrel 1 has an insert 4' placed therein. The insert 4' is positioned by ribs 21 at one end and by screwing into perforated plate 22 at the other end. A sealing plate 23 clamps the plate 22 to the end of the barrel 1 and seals the end of the barrel. The plate 23 is screwed on to a casing 24 which in turn is screwed on to the base 2 of the gun. Gas pressure is produced by detonating a cartridge 20, and controlled by a rupture diaphragm 12' provided in the sealing plate 23.
