Abstract

761,453. Blasting cartridges. CARDOX (GREAT BRITAIN), Ltd., ATHERTON, S., and SHIMMIN, T. A. Oct. 27, 1954 [Aug. 10, 1953], No. 22002/53. Class 9 (1). In blasting coal and other minerals water is forced into a borehole until fissures and cracks are filled with water and while the pressure subsists a blasting cartridge is discharged in the same or an adjacent borehole, initiation of the cartridge 1 being controlled by the water pressure. The cartridge has a casing 13 for the blasting charge, a discharge head 15 and a firing head 14 from which projects an initiator 16. Pivoted prongs 18 serve to anchor the cartridge in the borehole, the prongs being pivoted outwards by the discharge of gas. Electric leads 6 are brought into the firing head to terminal plugs in openings 23 and are connected to the initiator 16 which is preferably as described in Specification 617,136. The discharge pipe 8 of a pump 10 is connected to a passage 41 communicating through a valve with a passage 47 so that water can be forced into the casing 13 from whence it passes through the venting head into the rock face. When the pressure is sufficient pumping is stopped and the initiator fired, so that the gases then developed force the water out of the casing into the rock. A non-return valve 12 prevents backpressure on the pump and on firing the initiator the valve 44, 48 shuts off the passage 47 from the passage 41. The cartridge may be as in Specification 654,958 divided into two compartments separated by a rupture disc and the pipe 8 may have a branch through which water can be infused into a second borehole. The blasting charge may be liquid or solid carbon dioxide.
