Abstract

1334584 Prosthesis CERAVER 9 July 1971 [10 July 1970] 32466/71 Heading A5R A prosthetic appliance for replacing a natural, bendable joint between two bones, comprises first and second members 1, 3 for being secured to respective joints of the bones and having cooperating surfaces of non-porous aluminium oxide, the second member being of two-part construction comprising a metallic tail part 9 and a head part 2 which is secured to the tail part and which defines the co-operating surface of this member. In particular a hip prosthesis comprises a femoral element comprising a spherical head 2 of alumina and a metallic rod 3, and an acetabular element 1 formed of a concave hemisphere 4 of alumina which comprises grooves or ribs 5 on its convex surface which permit the prosthesis member to be fixed to the pelinc bone using adhesive cement, or by natural ossification. The two members 2, 9 comprising the femoral element may also be cemented together, grooves 8, 14 being provided in the respective members to retain the cement. The alumina parts are formed by sintering aluminium oxide powder.
