Abstract

1292561 Joint prostheses W X HALLORAN 11 Jan 1971 [1 June 1970] 1209/71 Heading A5R A joint prosthesis comprises a socket member 11 which is received for rotation in the natural socket or acetabulum 29, and has an artificial socket 15 formed eccentrically therein to receive the ball 21 of a ball member 17 which is also provided with a stem 41 for insertion in the intramedullary canal 43 of a bone shaft 19. When installed in the body the centers of rotation 31 and 33 of the natural socket and artificial socket respectively are spaced apart. In a hip joint as shown in Fig. 4 the weight is borne by a flange 47 which rests on the edge of the bone shaft 19. This prosthesis is also suitable for the shoulder joint, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown). Alternative geometrics are illustrated in Figs. 9 to 12 (not shown):
