Abstract

1483938 Hip-joint acetabulum members ROSENTHAL TECHNIK AG 19 Sept 1974 [2 Oct 1973] 40811/74 Heading A5R An artificial joint socket for an endoprosthesis of the hip comprises a part-spherical cup 8, whose convex surface 10 has at least three locating pins 1 extending outwardly therefrom for insertion, in use, into respective blind bores previously formed in bone to which the cup is to be fixed, with the or a given three of the pins being arranged in an approximately equiangular relationship about the axis of the part-spherical cup, and the concave surface of the cup being cemented to a resilient partspherical insert 7 nested therewithin. Each pin has a groove 16' aligned with a groove in surface 10 so that a surgical screw 5 can be inserted into the groove and firmly grip bone inside the blind bore. The outer surface 10 of the cup is either porous or is provided with grooves 9' to assist in ingrowth of bone. Grooves 9" are provided in the mating surfaces of the cup and insert to key the surfaces together. The cup is preferably formed of aluminium oxide and the insert of plastics material. The socket is inserted by first milling a part-spherical cavity in the bone, then temporarily fixing a milling-guide into the cavity, and milling the blind bores through guide holes in the milling-guide. The guide is then removed and the socket fitted. The cup may alternatively be fitted to the blind holes by elongated bifurcated members which clamp the socket to the bone.
