Abstract

1334548 Laminates GENERAL BINDING CORP 1 Dec 1970 [15 Dec 1969 17 Aug 1969] 57043/70 Heading B5N A warp-free flat laminated article is produced from a film of polyethylene terephthalate coated with a heat-reactivatible adhesive by cutting two pieces from the film in a longitudinally perpendicular manner with respect to one another, placing them in a dimensionally aligned arrangement with a flat object to be laminated between them so that the adhesive surface of each piece of film is in contact with the object and subjecting the assembly to heat and pressure. The adhesive may be polyethylene or an ethylene-ethyl acrylate copolymer applied to the film by extrusion coating. Alternative adhesives are copolymers of ethylene with 1- olefins, polystyrene, polyvinyl halides, polyvinylidene halides, polyacrylates, polyamides, polycarbonimides, polyethers, polycarbonates and polyoxyalkylenes. An envelope may be produced by applying heat discretely in several spots near the edges of the superposed pieces of coated film to effect heat-stitching, inserting the object to be laminated, e.g. an indicia-bearing card, and subjecting the assembly to heat and pressure, e.g. by means of pressure rollers heated to 275‹-325‹ F.
