Abstract

1334452 Ethylene glycol terephthalic acid esters FMC CORP 19 April 1971 [1 April 1970] 25815/71 Heading C2C A light-coloured ethylene glycol terephthalic acid ester is produced from a grade of terephthalic acid which ordinarily will produce a dark coloured ester by a process comprising esterifying the terephthalic acid with at least 8 times its weight of ethylene glycol at 160-200‹ C. for a sufficient time to obtain the desired ester in solution in the excess glycol and at some time during or after the course of esterification, hydrogenating the reaction mixture at up to 200‹ C. and at an elevated pressure in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst for a time to reduce the level of colour forming impurities to not more than 103 p.p.m., separating the catalyst from the reaction mixture and vacuum stripping excess glycol from the ester. The principal colour forming impurity is 4-carboxybenzaldehyde which is generally present in the starting material in an amount of from 2000- 5000 p.p.m. Suitable catalysts are palladium, noble metals and finely divided nickel. The produced bis-(ethylene glycol) terephthalate may be polymerized to produce white polyesters for use in fibre and film production.
