Abstract
1321024 Esters BEIERSDORF AG 7 May 1971 13810/71 Heading C2C [Also in Division C5] Lightly coloured esters or polyesters are produced from saturated or unsaturated mono- or polycarboxylic acids and saturated or unsaturated mono- or poly-functional alcohols by heating a mixture of carboxylic acid or carboxylic anhydride and alcohol together with hydrogen and in the presence of 0À01-5% of a hydrogenation catalyst, based on the total weight of reactants, to 200-250‹ C. until the theoretically calculated amount of water has been separated and isolating the ester from the resulting reaction mixture. The hydrogenation catalyst is preferably finely divided nickel, platinum, palladium or nickel deposited on a suitable carrier. The acid component may be, for example, lauric, stearic, oleic, linoleic or montamic acid, wool wax acids or phthalic acid. Particularly suitable alcohol components are pentaerythritol, dipentaerythritol, diethylene glycol, 1,4 - butanediol, trimethylolpropane, glycerol, mannitol, sorbitol and sorbitan.
