Abstract

1334384 Modulatng light MARCONI CO Ltd 11 Jan 1971 [16 May 1970] 23817/70 Heading H4F [Also in Divisions C4 and G5] A display device comprises a film 1 of liquid crystals between a sheet of material 2 with a conducting surface and a sheet 3 of amorphous semi-conductor glass with two stable resistance states having a plurality of conductive pads 4 on the side away from the liquid crystals. The pads are biased to the threshold point of the semiconductor glass and pulses are applied to selected pads to switch the glass locally to its other state. The resulting field switches the liquid crystals to provide a display which is maintained by the bias and removed either by cancelling the bias or applying a reverse potential pulse. Moving and coloured displays are referred to. The glass contains As, Ge, Si and Te. The liquid crystals include 40% cholesteryl benzoate, 40 % cholesteryl capronate and 20% cholesteryl acetate; 15% cholesteryl chloride, 80% cholesteryl nonanoate and 5% cholesteryl oleate; N-p-methoxybenzylidene-p-phenylazoaniline; n-octyl p-azoxymethyl cinnamate; butyl p-(p-ethoxyphenoxycarbonyl)-phenol carbonate and cholesteryl 2-(2-ethoxyethoxy) ethyl carbonate. Quinolinium tetra cyanoquinodimethane may be added to increase conductivity and provide a resistance heating effect in the crystals. A second liquid crystal p-ethoxybenzylidene p-cyanoaniline may be added if the liquid crystals have a very high resistance.
