Abstract
133,432. Harries, H. J. Oct. 8, 1918. Pneumatic; design; sound of discharge, modifying.-Relates to pneumatic guns of the powder-charge type in which the gases generated by firing a cartridge act on a piston and drive it forwards to compress and force air into the chamber of the gun. The invention consists in providing an adjustable valve in the end of the compression chamber, which can be set to open when the compression has attained a certain value dependent upon the desired range and corresponding elevation of the gun. In the construction shown, air in rear of the piston f, Fig. 1, is compressed in the chamber b by firing a cartridge d and passes into the barrel a through a port c. The range is regulated by the adjustable relief valve n, Fig. 3, which is set to correspond with the elevation of the gun by a pointer-carrying handle o. On completion of the compression stroke, the piston strikes a rod i and operates the slide valve k, thereby opening the front end of the cylinder b to exhaust, preferably through a silencer. The gun is intended to throw depth-charges, or for use as a trench mortar. According to the Provisional Specification, the barrel a is made of ribbed aluminium with a steel liner.
