Each bar 10 has a nut engaged by a screw 12 rotatable by bevel gearing 13 from a common shaft 14 having a hand wheel 15 whereby the tool head 16 is vertically adjustable. The tool head, which has a rotating or rocking tool 3, is slidable along the cross members 11 and has ears 33, 34 connected to cables which run over pulleys 29 ... 32 and pulleys 27, 28 on the rods 25, 26 of a piston 24 within the cylinder 23. The ends of the cylinder are connected to the bottom of respective tanks 37, 38 partially filled with oil, the upper ends of the tanks being connected by pipes 39, 40 and a valve 22 to atmosphere 41 and a source of pressure air 42. The valve is actuated by members 20 on a rod 18 having adjustable blocks 19 engageable by an arm 17 which is slidable along the rod and connected to the tool head, actuation of the valve reversing the direction of travel of the tool head. One of the members 20 on rod 18 also actuates a lever 55 of a valve 53 which is connected to air supply 42 and the ends of the cylinder 44, the piston 45 of which has a rod 46 acting through the pawl-and-ratchet mechanism 49, 50 on one of the rods 6 carrying the toothed wheels 5 to advance the carriage along the rails. The tool may be operated by compressed air supplied through a pipe 43.
