Abstract

1334088 Scouring and milling machine SELLERS & CO (HUDDERSFIELD) Ltd 14 Jan 1972 [15 Jan 1971] 2148/71 Heading D1L In a scouring and milling machine an endless length of fabric 38 in rope form is fed by a cloth roller 15 through aperture 24 into a box housing formed by a trough having bottom wall 21 and side walls 22 and is pushed along the trough in a piled condition by a reciprocating shoe element 20 disposed at the inlet end of the trough and reciprocated via spindle 20a which passes through elongated slot A in the trough side wall 22, link 25a and rotating crank wheel 27. The trough is formed with at least part of its side, bottom or top walls movable with respect to the remainder for further compacting the fabric moving therealong. Conveniently the top wall is formed with a section 32 which is pivotable about spindle 31 by piston arrangement 36 and has apertures 33 formed in its underside and the side walls 22 are provided with sections 22a which are pivotable about spindles 22b and have apertures 22c formed therein. Spray heads 30 may be provided at intervals along the base of the trough. In operation, reciprocating shoe element 20 pushes cloth 38 along the trough and at the same time top wall part 32 and side wall parts 22a are reciprocated to alternately squeeze and release the cloth so that excess scouring or washing liquor provided from sprays 30 is forced through the fabric and passes through apertures 22c and 33 to the base of the scouring and milling housing to maintain a reservoir of liquor through which the cloth passes. The machine may also include a beater roller 44, an auxiliary scouring and washing spray 19, motor 16 for driving the roller 15 and reciprocating shoe element 20, a closable access opening 11, a liquor circulation pump 37 connected to the spray heads and an outlet 42 formed in a sub-base 41 disposed in the machine for collection of the used liquor, and an adjustable flap 43 located at the outlet end of the trough and positioned to restrict the free escape of fabric from the trough. When the scouring operation described above is completed the milling process is carried out by applying a constant pressure on the travelling fabric from top and side flaps 32 and 22a respectively and using tail flap 43 to build up a required pressure on the fabric in the trough. Reciprocation of the shoe element may alternatively be achieved by connecting spindles 20a to a reciprocating hydraulic or pneumatically operated piston (Fig. 2, not shown).
