1333576 Sustained - release medicaments ALZA CORP 21 Oct 1970 49975/70 Heading A5B A medicament form from which a drug is released at a substantially uniform rate over a prolonged period comprises a shaped matrix of a first polymer through which the drug in the form of solid particles is evenly distributed, overlaid by an outer coating of a second polymer which is insoluble in body fluids. The polymers are so chosen that the rate of diffusion of the drug through the first polymer is greater (e.g. twice or ten times as rapid) than through the second. Examples relate to medicaments in which progesterone or medroxyprogesterone acetate is dispersed through a matrix of a polydimethylsiloxane (which is cured with the drug in situ) overlaid by a layer of polyethylene or ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer, various procedures for making them being described.
