Abstract
1361289 Bandage for administering drugs ALZA CORP 14 June 1971 27693/71 Heading A5R A bandage for continuously administering controlled quantities of systemically active drugs through the skin or oral mucosa comprises a laminate of a backing member which defines one face of the bandage, a pressuresensitive adhesive surface which defines the other face of the bandage and between the two faces at least one reservoir including the drug and having a wall member which controls the rate of flow of drug to the skin. The reservoir or reservoirs may be a walled container, a solid matrix throughout which the drug is distributed or a plurality of microcapsules distributed throughout the adhesive which may comprise a matrix. The drug formulation which may be a solid or a solution in a pharmacologically acceptable solvent, diffuses through the wall member provided by the container, microcapsules or the matrix, and through the adhesive to be absorbed by the body. The thickness and nature of the wall member through which the drug diffuses controls the rate at which the drug reaches the skin. The wall member may comprise one or more. The membrane or microcapsule coating or matrix may be of a silicone rubber or a hydrophilic polymer of an ester of an olefinic acid. Numerous examples of substances suitable for use as the drug, the solvent for the drug, the backing member and the adhesive are given. The adhesive may cover all the body-contacting surface of the bandage or may be placed only around the periphery of that surface. The backing member may be coated with a material of low adhesion to the pressure-senstive adhesive, so that the bandage can be rolled up. Reference has been directed by the comptroller to Specification 998794.
