1332656 Beverage making apparatus STRIX Ltd and J C TAYLOR 22 Oct 1971 [27 July 1970] 36217/70 Heading A4E [Also in Division H1] A beverage-making apparatus of the pressure vacuum reflex type comprises a chamber 2 Fig.1, in which water is boiled and is forced into a chamber 4 containing solid beverage constituents 7, the infused mixture subsequently passing into chamber 2, a port 10 of the wall of chamber 4 and a stopper 8 acting as a filter, there being thermally responsive means 14 subjected to the temperature of air in the chamber 4 and operative when said temperature exceeds a predetermined limit during the passing of the water into chamber 4 to switch off or reduce the heat output from a heater. The means 14 may be incorporated into a lid 11 of chamber 4, the lid being pivoted to a stand supporting the chambers and having a base incorporating the heater which may be gas or electric, the means 14 comprising a mechanical device for controlling a gas-supply valve in the case of a gas heater. A THERMALLY-RESPONSIVE MEANS 14 in the form of an electric switch for an electric heater may comprise a bi-metallic strip 21, Fig.2, having a U-shaped aperture cut in it to form a tongue 22 which is stressed so that it will snap between two stable positions on either side of an intermediate unstable position in which it is contained in the general plane of the strip 21. A movable contact 15, Fig.1, normally contacting a fixed contact 16, is acted upon by a rod 28 on tongue 23 to open the contacts as the strip 21 heats up. The contacts are prevented from automatically closing when the strip 21 cools by engagement of contact 15 with a resilient latch 29, a pressbutton 30 being provided to reset the switch.
