1332613 Hydrogenation process INSTITUT FRANCAIS DU PETROLE DES CARBURANTS ET LUBRIFIANTS 3 Feb 1972 [9 Feb 1971] 5133/72 Addition to 1233129 Heading C2C Unsaturated compounds containing both a carbon-carbon unsaturation and at least one distinct functional group are hydrogenated using a catalyst obtained by contacting a transition metal compound with an aluminium compound of the formula where m is 1, 2 or 3, Me is a monovalent or a divalent metal of Group Ia or IIa of the Periodic Chart referred to hereinbefore, p is the valency of the metal Me, and the X radicals are each R, OR, NR 2 , NHR or SR groups where R is a substituted or unsubstituted monovalent hydrocarbon radical optionally containing one or more heteroatoms with the proviso that two X radicals may be joined to form an -A-Z-B- or -O-A-Z-B-O- group where A and B are alkylene groups and Z is an alkylene group, an oxygen or sulphur atom, a NH or N-hydrocarbyl group or a polyvalent metal (see main patent). Examples convert sulpholene to sulpholane, butylvinyl ether to butylethyl ether, methyl and ethyl acrylates to the propionates, maleic anhydride to succinic anhydride, mesity oxide to methylisobutyl ketone and ethyl linoleate to ethyl stearate.
