Abstract

1469531 Carboxylic acid-alkylene oxide adducts IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 11 June 1974 [25 June 1973 27 Sept 1973] 30029/73 and 45228/73 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] Carboxylic acid-alkylene oxide adducts of formula in which R is hydrogen, a hydrocarbon group, or a substituted hydrocarbon group, R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen or a C 1 -C 24 hydrocarbon group, R<SP>21</SP> is a C 1 -C 24 hydrocarbon group, x is zero or 1, Y is a polyolefine oxide residue and p is zero or an integer between 1 and 50 and is chosen so that the compound molecular weight lies between 500 and 50,000, are prepared by reacting the corresponding complex carboxylic acid with an olefine oxide. The carboxylic acid is in turn prepared by the inter-molecular esterification of a hydroxyalkanoic acid with a carboxylic acid which does not contain a hydroxyl group. Hydroxyalkanoic acids may be glycolic, lactic, hydracrylic and 12-hydroxystearic acid and the chain terminating acid may be an alkanoic acid equivalent to the hydroxyalkanoic acid, e.g. stearic acid. Examples describe the reaction of a poly-(hydroxystearic acid) with ethylene oxide. The compounds have surface active properties and may be used as dispersants for oil or petroleum resins in water. Examples describe the dispersion of crude oil in water.
