Abstract
1332521 Impregnation apparatus DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 5 Jan 1971 435/71 Heading D1L Apparatus for producing resin impregnated fibre tape 8 comprises a bath 10 for holding liquified resin 18, means 2, 3 for introducing a multi-fibre tape 8 into the bath 10, and means 4, 5 and 6 for aligning the tape 8 with a slit 17, the slit being formed by two members 14, 16. The first member 14 is fixed relative to the bath 10 and the second member 16 is moveable relative, to the first member and is biassed towards a position at a predetermined distance from the first member 14, the biassing force being such that irregularities in the tops 8 will displace, the moveable member 16 before jamming or rupture of the tape occurs. Preferably the biassing force is applied by springs 42 and the predetermined distance between the members is adjustable. In a preferred embodiment the tape 8 is obtained by drawing a plurality of bundles of fibre 1 over a series of pulleys 4, two of which operate in parallel and each have a series of guide tracks 5 accurately aligned with the slit 17 and with the tracks on the other pulley 7 so that the tape 8 as drawn through the resin 18 is substantially flat and of uniform thickness and has its fibres extending parallel to the direction of motion of the tape 8.
