Abstract

The system protects optical fibres (1) against mechanical stresses. Two tapes (2, 3) made from a material whose elongation is less than that of the fibres for the same load, are placed on either side of the fibre and united. One of the tapes may contain a material which is absorbant in the range of frequencies transmitted by the fibre. The tapes may be flat or corrugated. In another arrangement, one face of the tape is flat while the other has locations for the fibre with elastic or absorbent coating. Alternatively they may contain a fluid whose density is near that of the fibre.
