Abstract

1,121,762. Making hollow bodies by winding. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP. 23 Sept., 1965, No. 40597/65. Heading B8G. Means for winding filamentary material on to a rotating and irregularly shaped mandrel comprises an endless chain 43 passing over at least three sprocket wheels 37, 39, 41, a carriage 47 carrying a filament guide for traversing the filamentary material on to the mandrel, and a sliding connection between the carriage 47 and the chain 43 such that as said connection moves with the chain it causes a traversing motion of the carriage 47 whilst following those paths of the chain 43 that have a component of direction parallel to the axis of the mandrel. In Fig. 2, the sliding connection can move up and down the carriage 47 and the carriage will perform a traversing motion whilst the sliding connection is following any path of the chain except the path 69 between the sprocket wheels 37, 45. The horizontal paths of the chain cause maximum traversing speed of the carriage 47 and the inclined paths of the chain cause reduced traversing speeds of the carriage. The chain path 67 causes a temporary reversal of direction of traverse approximately half way along the traverse stroke controlled by the lower half of the chain. The setting of the sprocket wheels is adjustable in the vertical slots 33, and the slots 33 may be formed in a single plate or in a plurality of plates 31 that can be selectively spaced apart along rails 26, 28. The apparatus may be used in the fabrication of rocket engine casings wherein glass fibres or similar filaments are wound over a removable mandrel while a thermosetting resin is applied to the filaments, the resin being cured on completion of the winding operation. The resin may be an epoxy resin.
