Abstract

1332466 Decomposing ammonium sulphate ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 14 Dec 1970 [30 Jan 1970] 59319/70 Heading C1A Ammonium bisulphate and ammonia are produced by (a) injecting a fluid mixture comprising ammonium sulphate and water into a stream of hot combustion gases in a decomposition zone, the temperature of the gases being above the decomposition temperature of ammonium sulphate, thereby evaporating the water and converting the ammonium sulphate into ammonium bisulphate and ammonia to form a gas mixture of hot combustion gases and ammonia having droplets of molten ammonium bisulphate suspended therein, (b) separating the ammonium bisulphate from the gas mixture, (c) collecting the ammonium bisulphate in a molten body, (d) withdrawing ammonium bisulphate from the molten body, and (e) withdrawing the gaseous mixture of hot combustion gases and ammonia from the decomposition zone. The fluid mixture may be injected through a plurality of nozzles, each of which includes a central tube for conveying the mixture and a water jacket surrounding the central tube.
