Abstract

1332232 Pipe elbow SOC GRENOBLOISE D'ETUDES ET D'APPLICATIONS HYDRAULIQUES 7 Jan 1971 [7 Jan 1970 22 Dec 1970] 880/71 Heading F2G A pipeline elbow has streamlined fins located at the curved section linking its inlet and outlet arms, all the fins lying perpendicular to a plane defined by the axes of the said arms. Preferably the fins are supported against vibration set up by turbulence at their downstream ends by plates lying in and/or parallel to the said plane. The shape of the fins is determined from the free streamline that would exist in the elbow under ideal flow conditions, the fins being sized used geometrical similarity. At the inlet end of the elbow the fins lie at an angle of 1À5 to 4 degrees to the axis of a straight pipe connected thereto and at the outlet end at an angle of no more than 2 degrees. The fins are spaced according to an optimisation of the opposing losses due to turbulence and obstruction by due to the fins. For a 90 degree elbow, between any two fins the spacing equals between 25% and 40% of the length of the chord of one of these fins. Alternatively the fins may be spaced equidistantly. The trailing end of the fins may have a truncated tip. Reinforcing members holding the fins within the elbow may be located just behind the leading edge of the fins and extend beyond the trailing ends.
