Abstract

1331674 Depositing tow in cans; cutting NEUMUNSTERSCHE MASCHINEN-UND APPARATEBAU GmbH 14 July 1971 [15 July 1970] 33147/71 Heading D1F In apparatus for cutting a tow of spun filaments during its deposition into cans 2, there is disposed a cap member 10 of substantially inverted V-shape between two can-receiving stations, and cutting means 16 e.g. an incandescent wire 19 or knife blade, is provided for engaging and cutting the tow as it is led from a full can 2 at one station, over the cap member 10 to an empty can 2' to be filled at the other station. The cap member 10 is shaped as a ridge-roof with a gap 17 at the ridge thereof. The cutting means 16 is mounted on a cantilever arm 15 which is raised or lowered by means of an hydraulic or pneumatic ram 13 acting on a shaft 14 carrying the arm 15. The cutting means 16 comprises two lateral hinged flaps 22 which engage the cap member 10 on either side of the gap 17. During downward movement of the cutting means, the cutting element 19 passes through the gap 17 and cuts the tow 18 passing across the gap. In a preferred embodiment, three can-receiving stations are provided equiangularly spaced on a turntable, means being provided to index the table 1 such that each can receives the tow in turn. In this case, three cap members are provided, one between each pair of stations. Each can is mounted on a rotatable platform 3 at each station. The sequence of operations of the indexing of the turntable 1, rotation of the platforms 3, and cutting of the tow is preferably actuated by a time switch.
