Abstract
1331087 Suspension polymerization of hydrophilic monomers CESKOSLOVENSKA AKADEMIE VED 15 Oct 1970 [24 Oct 1969] 49158/70 Headings C3C and C3P Hydrophilic monomers (i.e. monomers which are at least partially soluble in water under the polymerization conditions used) are homopolymerized or copolymerized with each other in a dispersing medium, which is an aliphatic hydrocarbon having 10 or more carbon atoms, an aromatic hydrocarbon or a chlorine-substituted hydrocarbon, in the presence of a suspension stabilizer, which is a polymer prepared by free radical or ionic polymerization of a monomer of the formula in which R is a monovalent α,#-mono-olefinically unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radical and R<SP>1</SP> is C 8 -C 20 straight-chain alkyl, or polyisobutylene of average molecular weight up to 400,000, or a C 10 -C 20 linear aliphatic alcohol or amine, or an oil-soluble poly-alphaolefin, or a polyethylene oxide of molecular weight 600 to 10,000, or a polyethoxylated octadecyl alcohol, or also when the dispersing medium is an aromatic or chlorinated hydrocarbon the suspension stabilizer can be rubber, polystyrene or polymethyl methacrylate. Crosslinking monomers, e.g. bis-methacrylates, bisacrylates or bis-methacrylamides, may be included in the polymerization to produce macro-reticular and macroporous gels for use in gel chromatography of water-soluble substances. Hydrophilic monomers exemplified are ethylene glycol monomethacrylate or monoacrylate, acrylonitrile, propylene glycol monomethacrylate, acrylamide, methacrylic acid, acrylic acid, glycerol monomethacrylate, diethylene glycol monomethacrylate, triethylene glycol monomethacrylate and methacrylamide; these are polymerized optionally with the cross-linking monomers using, as catalyst, azobisisobutyronitrile, benzoyl peroxide, hydrogen peroxide or ammonium persulphate. In some cases water/ethanol or water/ethylene glycol mixture is included in the polymerization and in some other cases carbon tetrabromide or acetaldehyde (chain transfer agent).
