Abstract

1330819 Sterile packaging method for surgical devices DOW CORNING CO 1 Sept 1972 [15 Sept 1971] 40571/72 Heading B8C A method of sterile packaging medical devices, such as a mammary prosthesis 11, comprises heating a first sheet 13 of copolymeric tetrafluorethylene-hexafluoropropylene fluorocarbon film placing the device 11 in a cavity moulded in the sheet 13, placing a second closure sheet 14 of the same material as the sheet 13 over the first sheet 13, bonding the two sheets together around the entire periphery of the cavity to form a sealed chamber with the device located therein, and applying heat, at a temperature of at least 120‹ C. but below the melting temperature of the fluorocarbon film, to the heat-sealed package for sufficient time to sterilize the device sealed therein. The device 11, before being placed in the cavity, which is preferably vacuum moulded, may be wrapped in a drapable sheet of material which is heat stable at the sterilizing temperature. The drapable sheet may be made of copolymeric tetrafluorethylenehexafluoropropylene. Dry heat is preferred to steam heat.
