Abstract
1330175 Aerials ELLIOTT BROS (LONDON) Ltd 30 July 1971 [4 Aug 1970] 37684/70 Heading H4A An aerial includes a twist-reflector assembly in which a plurality of grids, each comprising an array of parallel conductors, are arranged in front of a reflector, with the conductors of all grids parallel. The admittances of the individual grids, and the spacings between them and to the reflector are such, that at each of a plurality of operating frequencies, the respective admittances of the assembly to mutually perpendicular components of a predetermined plane polarized wave incident upon the assembly are of relatively inverse magnitude and of opposite sign. As described, a twist-reflector comprises two copper wire grids 5, 6 mounted in front of a continuous aluminium back plate 7. Each grid is formed by bonding the wires to a dielectric skin. Lowdensity dielectric foam sheets are then bonded between the skins, and between the innermost skin and the backplate, to maintain spacings D1, D2. In use, the twist-reflector is arranged with the wires of the grids 5, 6 at 45 degrees to the electric vector of an incident wave. The spacings between the wires of the grids, and the distances D1, D2 are selected so that at two predetermined frequencies the electric vector of the emergent wave is at 90 degrees to that of the incident wave. In application to a Cassegnain type aerial, Fig. 1, not shown, a feed horn projects through a twist-reflector of the kind described, and radiates plane polarized waves towards a parabolic trans-reflector having strips or wires which are parallel to said plane of polarization, and which may be embedded in a fibreglass honeycomb provided with front and rear dielectric reinforcing skins. The transreflector collimates the waves received from the horn, and reflects them towards the twist-reflector, which re-reflects them with their plane of polarization turned through 90 degrees, so that they then pass through the trans-reflector. Scanning may be effected by tilting the twistreflector.
