Abstract

1330107 Acetic anhydride BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 19 April 1971 [10 Feb 1970] 21415/71 Heading C2C Acetic anhydride is prepared by reacting acetic acid with ketene in a single column having a reaction zone in which the ketene concentration decreases upwardly above the point of ketone supply and a distillation zone in which the acetic acid conentration decreases downwardly below the point of ketene supply. The column may suitably be a bubble cap tray column, sieve plate column, valve plate column or packed column and preferably has between 7 and 40 theoretical trays, between 1 and 10 in the reaction zone and between 5 and 20 in the distillation zone. The process is preferably carried out at atmospheric pressure and at a temperature of from 100‹ to 140‹ C. in the reaction zone.
