Abstract

1329723 Metal-plastics laminates IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 7 Sept 1971 [8 Sept 1970] 42965/70 Headings B5A and B5N A laminated sheet comprises at least one unplasticized sheet of a synthetic resinous material bonded to at least one sheet of metal by means of a cured intermediate adhesive coating which comprises before curing (1) an epoxy resin, (2) a heat reactive phenol-formaldehyde resin and (3) an interpolymer of from 60 to 98% by weight of an alkyl methacrylate containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms in the alkyl portion, e.g. methyl methacrylate and from 40 to 2% by weight of a compound of the formula where R is a hydrogen or a lower alkyl radical containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms and Z is a radical, where R 1 is a radical derived by removing a hydroxyl group from a polyol or radical derived by removing the halogen from a halogen substituted epoxide, e.g. glycidyl methacrylate. The adhesive which may be pigmented or thinned, may be applied by spraying, roller spreading, dipping or painting and may be cured, e.g. in an oven or by infra-red radiation, prior to contacting the surfaces to be bonded. The bonding of the sheets may be effected: (a) by heating the plastics sheet to or above its softening point and pressing the sheets together, the adhesive having been applied to the metal and/or the plastics sheets; (b) by extruding a plastics sheet on to a metal sheet, either or both sheets carrying the adhesive; (c) laying an open compression mould over a metal sheet coated with cured adhesive, filling the mould with plastics material, laying a further cured adhesive coated metal sheet over the mould and applying pressure and heat to the assembly or (d) injecting plastics into a mould lined with metal sheets. The synthetic resinous material which may contain stabilizers, lubricants, impact modifiers, processing aids, anti-oxidants or fillers, may be a homo- or co-polymer of ethylene, propylene, butene, 4-methyl pentene-1, vinyl chloride, styrene or methyl methacrylate, a polyamide, a polycarbonate, an acrylonitrilebutadiene-styrene copolymer, a polyacetal, a polypropylene oxide, a polysulphone, a polyurethane, a phenol-formaldehyde resin or a ureaformaldehyde resin and may be foamed or unfoamed. The metal sheet may be of mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium, nickel, copper, silver or an alloy thereof.
