Abstract
1329629 Fluid pressure actuators ORIGA CYLINDRAR A B 21 Dec 1971 [22 Dec 1970] 59292/71 Heading F1D [Also in Division F2] A fluid pressure piston and cylinder unit comprises a piston 2 having a transmitting member 4 which projects through a slot 3 in the wall of the cylinder 1, and a sealing member 7 which is attracted into sealing relationship with the slot by magnetic forces and moved away from the slot between the piston and the transmitting member. The sealing member may be a lining or a strip 7 which is attracted to the slot by permanent or electromagnets 8, 9 and depressed in the vicinity of the transmitting member 4 by a bowed slide surface on the transmitting member; the sealing member 7 may also be of a permanentmagnetic material. The cylinder, may be made of aluminium or glass fibre reinforced plastics and formed with a wall thickened on its lower side as shown to increase its strength; the cylinder may have other cross-sectional shapes and may also be curved, in which case the piston preferably is hinged. Auxiliary seals of elastomeric material may also be provided adjacent the slot or sealing member 7. When the sealing member 7 is open to the interior of the cylinder only on one side the magnets 8 or 9 need only be provided on that side. In a modification, Figs. 3 & 4 (not shown), a further sealing strip (30) is provided on the outside of the slot and two bowed slide surfaces are provided on the transmitting member (14), the further sealing strip being pressed against the slot by a sealing collar (31) on the transmitting member. In this modification fluid passages in the piston and transmitting member are used to pass drive fluid (e. g. compressed air or oil for carrying out a machining operation by an external unit after the piston has been moved) from the cylinder to an outlet (28), a shuttle valve (26) being provided in the piston to close off the passage (20) or the passage (21) depending on which side of the piston the fluid pressure is applied. In a further modification, Fig. 5 (not shown) the shuttle valve is replaced by spring-loaded ball valves (32, 33).
