Abstract

1328975 Reconstituted expanded polystyrene GENERAL FOAM PRODUCTS Ltd 20 April 1971 [21 April 1970] 19075/70 Heading C3C Reconstituted expanded polystyrene is made by mechanically disintegrating previously formed expanded polystyrene into particles which retain their expanded character, applying a solvent, swelling agent or plasticizer for polystyrene to moisten only the surface of the particles and subjecting a mass of the particles so treated to pressure until they adhere together to form a shaped coherent body while retaining their expanded character. Heat may be applied to the mass of treated particles during or after the application of pressure. The product may be cut into sheets or panels or the treated particles may be moulded to form a sheet or board. A flame retardant, e.g. a haloalkyl phosphate, may be present in the solvent, swelling agent or plasticizer. In the examples expanded polystyrene waste was disintegrated in a knife cutting mill to form beads which were then sprayed with mixtures of white spirit, trichloropropyl phosphate, isopropyl alcohol, paraffin, perchlorethylene, trichlorethylene and/or trixylenyl phosphate, and the mass was fed into a mould and pressure applied to form a foamed body.
