Abstract
1328880 Sintered fibre composite SIEMENS A G 24 Nov 1970 [29 Nov 1969] 55925/70 Heading C7D A fibre-composite is made by sintering a pressed compact comprising mutually aligned fibres and a particulate matrix material. The mean particle size of the matrix material is not greater than the mean diameter of the fibres and not large in comparison with the mean lateral spacing between adjacent fibres. The matrix material may be a ceramic or metallic material and is preferably in the form of platelets, flakes or scales. An example describes the preparation of a composite of silicon nitride whiskers in a copper matrix. A mixture of copper platelets and silicon nitride whiskers are dispersed in water, filtered off, mixed with aqueous methyl cellulose solution, kneaded and then extruded to a blank. The blank is heated in a hydrogen atmosphere to remove the methyl cellulose and then sintered at 700‹C and a pressure of 5 Mkg/cm<SP>2</SP>.
