Abstract

1328227 Non-woven fabrics CARL FREUDENBERG 26 Nov 1970 [1. Dec 1969] 56271/ 70 Headings D2A and D2B A perforated fleece of textile fibres is made by filtering an aqueous slurry of textile fibres containing a heat activatable bonding agent, through a screen and thereby collecting the fibres on the screen as a fleece containing unactivated bonding agent, making slits in the fleece, stretching the fleece transverse to the slits and activating the bonding agent by heating the fleece while it is stretched, thereby stabilising the fleece in the stretched state. The fibres are at least 4 m.m. long and may be of wool, cotton, regenerated viscose or synthetic polymeric material such as nylon or polyester. The bonding agent may be of the type that softens on heating and resolidifies on cooling, or that gels on heating, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, or that undergoes vulcanisation on heating. The bonding agent in the form of an aqueous coagulatable latex may be added to the slurry, coagulation being achieved by adding an acid or a salt, by changing the electric charge of the bonding agent particles or by heat, whereby the bonding agent is deposited onto the fibres. The screen is preferably a continuously moving band and the slurry is deposited near the bottom of an upwardly travelling steeply inclined part of the screen, and it is preferably subject to suction. The slits may be made by sprung knives or blades or by rolls carrying razor shaped segments, and the slits may be 2 to 8 m.m. long and are preferably arranged in parallel rows. The fleece may be incompletely dried on a roll drier before it is stretched and dried by heating to a temperature above the activation temperature of the bonding agent. The stretching opens the slits to form holes in the fleece. In an example, a mixture of viscose fibres and polyamide fibres are dispersed in water to form a slurry to which is consecutively added a coagulatable butadiene acrylonitrile latex sold under the trade name Butofan, and a coagulant called Polimin (Trade Mark).
