Abstract

1328214 Preparing di(C 6 -C 20 alkyl)-3,5- di - tert - butyl - 4 - hydroxybenzyl phosphonates CIBA-GEIGY AG 28 Sept 1970 [29 Sept 1969] 46073/70 Heading C2P [Also in Division C5] Phosphonates of the general formula wherein X is an integer from 6 to 20 are obtained by reacting a compound of the formula with a phosphite of the formula ROP(OC x H 2x+1 ) 2 wherein R is C 1 -C 4 alkyl. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of a solvent and is preferably effected at 85‹ to 110‹ C. The reactants are preferably used in equimolar quantities or an excess of the phosphite, e.g. up to 10 times the molar amount of compound II may be used. The products are useful as antioxidants for a variety of substrates. The phosphite triesters ROP(OC x H 2x+1 ) 2 are obtained either (a) by reacting an alkanol ROH with PCl 3 to form RO.PCl 2 and then reacting the latter with 2 mols. of C x H 2x+1 OH in the presence of dimethylaniline or (b) by reacting a phosphite triester: (RO) 3 P with 2 moles of C x H 2x+1 OH in the presence of NaOCH 3 . Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 948,880.
