Abstract
1480127 Mixed phosphonate reaction products CIBA-GEIGY AG 18 Feb 1975 [20 Feb 1974] 6753/75 Heading C2P [Also in Division C3] The invention comprises a phosphonate mixture obtained by reacting 1 mol of pentaerythritol with 2 to 4 mols of dimethyl methanephosphonate at 50‹ to 200‹ C., and optionally subjecting the product to an aftertreatment with an alkylene oxide, (e.g. ethylene oxide or propylene oxide). The reaction can be carried out in the presence of a conventional transesterification catalyst and the methanol split off in the reaction is preferably continuously distilled off. When the molar ratio of pentaerythritol to phosphonate is 1 : 2 the product comprises a non-cyclic diphosphonate of the formula and cyclic diphosphonates, e.g. the compound: The reaction mixture also contains other phosphonates, e.g. those of the formula wherein n is an integer, e.g. 1 to 5, and especially 1 or 2. Compounds containing free phosphonic acid groups may also be present especially when the reaction is effected at above 150‹ C. The products are useful as reactive flameretardants in the production of polyurethane foams.
