Abstract
1327490 Refining copper METALLURGIE HOBOKEN-OVERPELT 23 Dec 1970 [24 Dec 1969] 61255/70 Heading C7D [Also in Division F4] Copper is melted and refined in a vertical furnace having a device for charging pieces to be melted at the top, and an opening for discharging liquid Cu at the bottom, the pieces being melted by contact with hot gases resulting from the combustion of a liquid or gaseous fuel with an oxygen-containing gas injected through burners mounted around the perimeter of the furnace, the gases being neutral, slightly oxidizing or slightly reducing. The oxygen and hydrogen contents of the gases are preferably both below 0À5 per cent. The fuel may be butane, propane, natural gas or a liquid hydrocarbon. The pressure of the injected combustion gas is 100-380 gr/cm<SP>2</SP> and the height of the charge column of copper is greater than 6m giving a pressure at the level of the liquid copper discharge opening of 35-130 gr/cm<SP>2</SP>.
