Abstract

1327171 Making filament-reinforced metal articles GENERAL MOTORS CORP 9 March 1972 [24 June 1971] 10944/72 Heading B3A [Also in Division E1] Composite filament-reinforced material, e.g. in sheet form for applications in the aircraft industry such as compressor blades and aerofoil surfaces, is of the kind manufactured from alternate layers 24 of filaments having a surface layer of silicon carbide and layers 26 of titanium or titanium alloy, the layers being subsequently bonded by hot pressing, the improvement consisting in interposing a coating of zirconium as a diffusion barrier between the surfaces of the filaments and the titanium or titanium alloy. The coating may be applied either to the filaments prior to assembly into the layers 24 or may be applied as an additional layer interposed between the layers 24, 26. In the illustrated example, a continuous filament having a tungsten core surrounded by a boron body which is coated with silicon carbide is passed through electrophoretic deposition apparatus (Fig. 5, not shown) whereby a coating of zirconium is deposited on the filament, after which the filament is wound on a drum in a single layer with the turns at desired spacings, the winding then being sprayed with polystyrene dissolved in toluene to produce a fibrepolystyrene sheet which is removed from the drum and cut into the rectangular most layers 24. The layers 24, 26 are then stacked and hot pressed in vacuum at temperatures of 1400‹, 1500‹ and 1600‹ F. for periods of half an hour and an hour respectively.
