The torque converter is for use as a starting torque converter, particularly in a rail vehicle, wherein the starting torque converter is used at lower speeds, where there is greater torque conversion, and another, cruising, torque converter is used for higher speeds where there is less torque conversion, the maximum efficiency of the starting torque converter of the invention occurring at a ratio n r /n p of 0À4 to 0À55, n r and n p being turbine and impeller speeds respectively.
