Abstract

1326261 Treating fibrous goods with solvents CIBA-GEIGY Ltd 29 May 1970 [2 June 1969 20 June 1969] 26151/70 Headings D1L and D1P In a method of treating fibrous goods in a container with an organic solvent having an s.g. greater than 1 and which is partially immiscible with water and forms at least partially an azeotrope therewith, the vapours evolved during processing are condensed and returned to the container via a pump or similar emulsifier, after removal of any undesired water. Fabrics of polyester or polyamide may be dyed in this manner using perchloroethylene as solvent. Excess vapour pressure may be avoided by using a closed, valved treatment vessel or by controlling the condensation capacity of the condenser. After processing, the fabric may be immersed in water (e.g. to dissolve out ionic substances present) and then heated to recover the solvent azeotropically. The treatment liquor may be non-aqueous, in which case any water absorbed from the goods during treatment is removed during recycling, or may be an aqueous emulsion in which case the water is also recycled. Conventional rotary drum apparatus, but incorporating a pump and condenser, may be used.
