Abstract

1326033 Casting composite articles; welding by fusion BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd 19 April 1971 [9 March 1970] 11270/70 Headings B3F and B3R [Also in Division H2] Hollow core aligned conductors 1, 2 are joined by filling the space between them with a metal body 3 which adheres to the facing ends of the conductors and in which at least one pair of straight ducts 8, 9 are formed to link the hollow cores of the conductors. The conductor ends are joined with inclined faces and are fitted with plugs 4, 5 and the metal body 3 is cast or formed by metal/inert gas welding within the space between the conductor ends, with the ducts 8, 9 providing a passage for oil flow between the cable cores. The plugs 4, 5 may initially have closed ends adjacent the metal body 3 and the ends are drilled with the body. The body metal may be cast around tubes which form linings for the ducts. The metal/inert gas and exothermic jointing methods of Specifications 1,262,871 and 2 and 1,299,726 are referred to.
