132,576. Anderson, F. A., Deacon, M., and Brady, N. P. W. Aug. 14, 1918. Destructive distillation, furnaces for. - Coal, shale, and like substances are distilled in a furnace in which the temperature is highest towards the centre and falls towards the two ends. The bed A of the furnace is heated by a zigzag duct B, the windings of which are closest together at about the centre of the bed. Gases heated by burners or in ducts B<1> bv the waste heat from the material in the furnace are supplied to the duct B at one or more points and travel in the direction of the entrance to the furnace.
