Abstract

1325702 Determination of octane number &c UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO 4 Sept 1970 42435/70 Heading B1X [Also in Division G1] The octane number or similar property of a hydrocarbon composition (which may be a mixture of hydrocarbons with other substances) is continuously determined by feeding the composition together with an oxygen-containing gas through a conduit 12 to a combustion chamber 16 where it is caused to burn with a stabilised cool flame, and the position of the flame front is sensed by a device 18 movable along the outside of the combustion chamber 16, or within it, by drive mechanism 24 controlled by a device 22 to which signals from the device 18 are fed. In one mode of operation, the device 22 actuates a recorder 29 which continuously records the octane number or the like which corresponds to the position of the flame front. In another mode of operation, the device 22 controls a pressure controller 23 in an exhaust-gas line 17 in such a sense as to vary the pressure in the combustion chamber so that the flame front is restored to a pre-determined position. The pressure, recorded by a recorder 27, then corresponds to the octane number or the like. The device 18 preferably comprises a pair of thermocouples 20, 21 spaced along the length of the combustion chamber, these registering the same temperature when the device 18 straddles the flame front. Heat-exchange fluid is passed around the combustion chamber.
