Abstract

1325680 Olefin oligomerisation catalysts BP CHEMICALS Ltd 11 Nov 1970 [22 Dec 1969] 62236/69 Heading B1E [Also in Division C5] An olefin oligomerisation catalyst comprises elemental potassium or the hydride thereof dispersed on anhydrous calcium carbonate, strontium carbonate or barium carbonate. The catalyst may contain from 0.1 to 25 parts by weight of potassium per 100 parts by weight of calcium, strontium or barium carbonate which may be in the form of powder, granules (chips or beeds) or pellets. The catalyst may be prepared by a process (A) which comprises stirring molten potassium metal with anhydrous calcium, strontium or barium carbonate heated to a temperature between the melting point of potassium and 400‹C, for example between 100 and 300‹C, in the presence of a blanket of hydrogen or inert gas or by a process (B) which comprises dissolving potassium metal in liquid ammonia, adding the resulting solution to anhydrous calcium, strontium or barium carbonate with vigorous stirring and thereafter allowing the liquid ammonia to evaporate from the resulting dispersion in the presence of a blanket of hydrogen or inert gas. Prior to use, the catalyst may be heated in hydrogen at a temperature of from 50 to 350‹C under atmospheric or elevated pressure. As exemplified, catalyst is prepared under a blanket of argon by process (A) from potassium and either barium carbonate (Example 1) or calcium carbonate (Example 2) or strontium carbonate (Example 3).
