Abstract
1325595 Sequencing circuits TEKTRONIX Inc 22 July 1970 [28 July 1969] 3643/73 Divided out of 1325594 Heading H3T [Also in Division H1] A switching circuit for operating a number of transistors 81-88 (Fig. 4) in sequence comprises series impedances 98 arranged between terminals 94 and 96 and with their junctions V 1 -V 8 connected to the transistor bases, each point also being connected via an impedance 100 to earth. It is shown that when suitable ramp currents 90, 92 of the same sign but of complementary value are supplied to 94, 96 the points V 1 to V 8 will in turn reach a maximum value sufficient to turn on the associated transistor. As described, each transistor 81 &c. is in fact a triplet of transistor devices forming part of an integrated circuit, the emitter of each device being fabricated in parts and connections being made from current source I E to a selected number of these parts as shown in Fig. 2, so that the output currents I<SP>1</SP> x , I<SP>1</SP> y , I<SP>1</SP> z are in a predetermined proportion. Currents I<SP>1</SP> x , I<SP>1</SP> y are used to position the spot of a C.R.T. at a desired position so that as the successive triplets are brought into operation the spot moves to a succession of points to trace an alphanumeric symbol. By suitable choice of component values in Fig. 4, the switching of successive triplets overlap (as indicated in the Figure) to cause a more-or-less smooth spot motion. Fig. 11 illustrates an alternative circuit in which n currents I are provided by each of sources 236-242, and 244 and 246 provide a sink for (n - 1) I, the remaining current (I) passing through one of the diode-connected transistors 248-254. The currents taken by 244 and 246 are varied (complementarily) in ramp manner and each transistor 248 &c. is conductive in turn, the voltage across it switching the associated transistor I 1 -I n (which also is in practice a triplet). Figs. 9 and 10 illustrate part of an integrated circuit realization of a number of sets of transistor triplets (each set representing a character capable of display). Conductors 208 &c. pass, in each horizontal line, over a triplet to which the part emitter connections are made in the desired pattern by pre-removal of an oxide coating using a mask. P-type base diffusion areas 204 are provided with connections 290, and N-type emitter diffusions 206 are made into the base areas. Conductors 202 provide collector contacts to an N-type epitaxial layer 200 formed on a P-type substance with a conventional N+ buried layer between them.
