Abstract

1325450 Smoke and ignition compositions NORTH AMERICAN ROCKWELL CORP 17 Sept 1970 [6 Dot 1969] 44484/70 Heading C1D A castable smoke composition comprises red phosphorus, an alkali metal nitrate, a metal, e.g. magnesium, and a polymeric binder. The binder may have a high oxygen content and may be a polysulphide rubber, a polysulphideepoxy mixture, a hydroxy-terminated polyester formed from adipic acid and diethylene glycol, or a hydroxy- or carboxy-terminated polybutadiene. Triacetin, bis - dinitropropylacrylateformal, or trimethylolethane trinitrate may be included as a plasticizer, polymethylene polyphenyl isocyanate, trimethylol propane, hexanetriol, castor oil, toluene diisocyanate, diphenyl methane diisocyanate, or tris-[1-(2-methyl)- aziridinyl] phosphine oxide as a cross-linking agent, and ferric acetylacetonate and trimethylol propane as accelerators. The constituents may be mixed under vacuum and cast into closed containers or grenades. An ignition composition which may be applied to the surface of the cast smoke composition comprises silicon, lead oxide, cuprous oxide, and nitrocellulose lacquer.
