Abstract

1325363 Phenol derivatives MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 10 June 1970 [10 June 1969] 28206/70 Heading C2C [Also in Division G2] The invention comprises photographic colour couplers which include a grouping of the formula -NHCOY where Y represents an aryl, cycloalkyl, aryloxyalkylidene, alkaryloxyalkylidene, aralkylidene or arylamino group, and in which the nitrogen atom of this grouping is linked to a phenolic group in the ortho position relative to the hydroxyl group of the phenolic group, the phenolic group having substituents R and R<SP>1</SP> in positions ortho and para, respectively, relative to the -NHCOY group and R and R<SP>1</SP> independently represent a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having at least 2 carbon atoms except that at least one of R and R<SP>1</SP> is an alkyl group and the alkyl group or groups covalently bonded to the aromatic ring or rings of the coupler contain a total of at least 12 carbon atoms, and in which a substituent X is present in the para position relative to the hydroxyl group and X is a hydrogen atom or a substituent which is capable of being expelled during the coupling reaction. The compounds may be prepared by acylation or halogenation.
