Abstract

1309259 Sulphur-containing polyaryl polyphenolic compounds UNIROYAL Inc 13 March 1970 [17 March 1969] 12095/70 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] The invention comprises compounds of the general formula wherein Ar and Ar<SP>1</SP> are the same or different radicals selected from substituted and unsubstituted carbocyclic aryl radicals, R is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, R<SP>1</SP> is a hydrogen atom, a methyl group, or a -CH 2 - or -CH 2 CH 2 - group joined ortho to the Ar<SP>1</SP> group, y is 1 or 2, x is 1 or 2, and n is an integer of from 1 to 5, the point of the attachment of the, or each alkylene chain to the Ar radicals being ortho or para to a hydroxy group on each of the Ar groups. They are prepared by reacting the corresponding bis- (beta-chloro-beta-arylalkyl) mono- or di-sulphide with a phenol having at least one reactive hydrogen ortho or para to the hydroxy group. The compounds of the invention may be used as antioxidants.
