[Also in Division C3] The invention comprises compounds of formula H-(A) n -H in which n is an integer in the range of from 2 to 12 and two or more of the units A may be different, wherein A represents -R<SP>1</SP>Y-R<SP>11</SP>- wherein R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP>, which may be the same or different, each represents a radical of formula wherein R 2 and R 3 , which may be the same or different, each represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl group; R 4 represents an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl group and Y represents a direct link between the benzene rings of R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP>, sulphur, an alkylene radical or a linear radical containing an alkylene linkage and a sulphur atom in which, if there is more than one sulphur atom, the sulphur atoms are separated by at least two carbon atoms. These compounds may be prepared by oxidatively coupling one or more bisphenols of formula (A), (B) or (C).
