Abstract

1325014 Photo-electrophoretic imaging composition XEROX CORP 29 Sept 1970 [3 Oct 1969] 46279/70 Heading G2H [Also in Division H1] A photo-electrophoretic imaging composition comprises a plurality of finely divided particles in an insulating carrier liquid each of the particles comprising at least two differently coloured electrically photo-sensitive pigments in a resin, the pigments being both the primary electrically photo-sensitive ingredient and the primary colourant for the particles. In the specific embodiments compositions which are violet or purple, are made using two pigments whilst black compositions are formed using cyan, magenta and yellow pigments. The particles may be made by adding the pigments to molten low MW polyethylene and cooling while agitating to give encapsulated pigment particles. Alternatively a solvent suspension of the pigments together with copoly-styrene-butyl methacrylate is spray dried. The resultant encapsulated pigment particles are dispersed in sperm oil together with low MW polyethylene, tricresyl phosphate #-carotene, a polymer and kerosene and on a conductively-coated glass cylinder. Many suitable insulating liquids electrically photosensitive pigments, polymers and supports are specified. The encapsulated pigments may include FeO, CuO or dyes to control the colour of the particles.
