Abstract

1324633 Measuring area UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF NORTH WALES 31 July 1970 [31 July 1969] 38564/69 Heading G4H Apparatus for the measurement of areas includes a T.V. camera 4 deriving, by scanning, a video signal which exceeds a predetermined amplitude level when the scan is over the areas to be measured, pulses from a generator 11 being counted in a counter 13 when the level is exceeded. As described for measuring blight or insect damage on leaves, a filter 17 is used to enhance the colour contrast of the brown diseased portion and the green portion. Discriminator 7 blocks all signals below the predetermined level, this level being manually adjusted by superimposing the counted pulses on the video signal to control a monitor 15, the brightness level of the dots displayed being viewed to determine a suitable discriminating level. The counter is enabled for 1 second to measure the area during several scans, the count being displayed, printed, recorded or used to control an integrating analogue meter. The apparatus may be used for the measurement of areas of irregular shape such as chemical particles or biological specimens.
